A calendar guide describes Thrissur Pooram as the largest and best known of the Poorams, held on the day the moon rises with the Pooram star in the Malayalam month of Medam.
Temples in and around Thrissur bring their deities to the Vadakkunnathan Temple. The guide describes a procession with Chenda Melam and Pancha Vadyam percussion and more than 50 decorated elephants.
